Procedure for Scoring Team, Individual, and Relay Rounds at ARML

It is very important to concentrate so that NO ERRORS are made during the scoring process. We have instituted a process that is designed to ELIMINATE errors from taking place. It is your responsibility to maintain a high level of concentration and to follow these simple steps in order to achieve near PERFECTION in our scoring. We have found that errors usually occur when these steps are not strictly followed.

Individual Rounds

1st Reader:

  • Reads the answers

  • Does not mark the paper indicating whether right or wrong.

  • Turn paper over, and then records the score (1 for correct, 0 for incorrect) making sure that the scores correspond to the number of the problem by aligning the scores vertically with the lower numbered problem being written above the higher numbered problem.

2nd Reader:

  • Reads the answers

  • Indicates whether it is correct or incorrect being careful not to obstruct the original answer provided by the student.

  • Turn paper over, and then decide whether Reader 1 is correct or incorrect in their assessment.

  • If Reader 1 and Reader 2 agree, then Reader 2 will circle the points assigned by Reader 1. If Reader 1 and Reader 2 disagree, it is their job to discuss and make the proper assessment.

Team Round

1st Reader:

  • Reads the answers

  • Does not mark the paper indicating whether right or wrong.

  • Turn paper over, and then records the total number of correct responses.

2nd Reader:

  • Reads the answers

  • Indicates whether it is correct or incorrect being careful not to obstruct the original answer provided by the student(s).

  • Turn paper over, and then decide whether Reader 1 is correct or incorrect in their assessment.

  • When the 2nd Reader turns the paper over and agrees with the number correct, he/she circles the number correct and multiples it by 4 and records the total. If Reader 2 disagrees with the assessment of Reader 1, it is their job to discuss and make the proper assessment.

Relay Rounds

1st Reader:

  • Reads the answers

  • Does not mark the paper indicating whether right or wrong.

  • Turn paper over, and then records the score for that paper.

2nd Reader:

  • Checks the answer.

  • If the answer is incorrect the score that is recorded should have been recorded is zero.

  • If correct, checks the timeframe.

    • If three minutes is circled, then the score that is recorded is a 5.

    • If six minutes is circled, then the score that is recorded is 3.

  • Reader 2 then turns the paper over and verifies the assessment of Reader 1.
  • If Reader 2 disagrees with Reader 1, it is their job to discuss and make the proper assessment.

Conclusion of Team and Individual Rounds

Once all of the Team Rounds and Individual Rounds have been corrected, they will made available for the coaches to verify. Under no circumstances, will the papers be removed from the location where the papers have been placed. Any discrepancies should be immediately brought to the attention of the Head Grader. No challenges for the team and individual rounds will be accepted once the relay rounds have begun.

Conclusion of Relay Rounds and Power Round Score Announcement

After the relay rounds have been corrected, the papers will be made available to the coaches at the same location as before. The score for power round is also provided during this time. Coaches will have one half hour to verify the scores of the relay rounds. At the conclusion the half hour, all results will become final.
